The Repeal Process - Timeline

The Cambridge City Council will meet soon to reconsider the Building Identification Sign and General Waiver provisions of the amendment (see Step 3 below).

Step 1 - After a law is enacted, citizens can petition to repeal it.  To succeed, such a petition must be signed by at least 12% of registered voters within 20 days.

The sign amendment was enacted by the Cambridge City Council on Monday, September 27, and signed petitions were delivered to the Cambridge Election Committee on Friday, October 15.

Step 2 - The petition is certified by the Cambridge Election Commission.

The petition was certified with 11,461 valid signatures on Wednesday, October 20.

Step 3 - The Cambridge City Council must immediately reconsider the sign amendment.

The City Council, at its October 25 meeting, ordered the City Manager to confer with various city departments and report back to the Council by November 1.

The City Council will likely take this matter up again at their November 1 meeting.

Step 4 - A question to repeal is placed on the ballot. Possible - 2011
Will occur in 2011 if the City Council does not vote to rescind.
